BOOKS FOR THE HOLIDAYS
5 quality books to cap of a lousy year.
David Goggins goes deep into his life of challenges and struggles to develop and share a philosophy of the 'callous mind' - a mental toughness which expresses itself through constantly superseding all manner of physical barriers. The only US soldier to successfully complete SEAL training, US Army Ranger School and Air Force Tactical Air Controller Training he's become an avid ultra-marathon runner, accomplishing feats that few human beings on earth can do. A former Guinness world record holder for the number of pull-ups performed in a day at 4,030, Goggins continues to pursue daring physical feats. What makes this book most attractive is the fact that Goggins insists on the mind being a tool that could direct human beings to accomplishing the impossible. He almost compares the mind to a muscle which can be trained to surpass boundaries consistently thus creating human beings who can attain their full 100%. This is no ordinary self-help book. It's a story of a man who made himself uncommon amongst the uncommon, told in a lucid and unique style. For this reason, 'Can't Hurt Me' is our number #1 recommended book of the season.

IN DEFENSE OF A LIBERAL EDUCATION - FAREED ZAKARIA
Fareed Zakaria, the host of CNN's GPS, goes through the history of liberal education in a smart and analytical style in his publication 'In Defense of LIBERAL EDUCATION'. As is common with Zakaria, he breaks down the history of liberal education in a style that's not uncommon for an academic of his calibre. By firstly engaging us in the history of liberal education, from the times of the Ancient Greeks to the more modern revolutions in the realm of education by men like Charles William Elliot - a former Harvard President - Fareed gives us a much deeper understanding of the purpose of a liberal education and why it still proves relevant in the 21st century.

TEN LESSONS FOR A POST-PANDEMIC WORLD - FAREED ZAKARIA
Dr. Zakaria falls high on our list of selections once more with his timely contribution of 10 Lessons For a Post Pandemic World. Although there is some acknowledgment that pandemics are going to be something we'd have to grapple with in the future, Zakaria points out clearly that it's most important to engage in a process of learning from our lack of preparation. The COVID19 pandemic essentially translates into a 'warning shot' which can prove even more fatal if the necessary lessons aren't learnt. Fareed provides us with a comprehensive and in-depth list in his 10 Lessons.

THE GREAT INFLUENZA - JOHN BARRY
The Great Influenza offers a stunning look at the 'Spanish flu' pandemic of some 100 years ago. Written and published long before the 2020 COVID19 pandemic was even a thought, it goes into lengthy detail concerning the mistakes made, the lives lost, and the widespread confusion caused by a pandemic not too dissimilar from the one of 2020. It's a long but worthwhile read...its not like we have much places to go.

CATCH ME IF YOU CAN - FRANK ABAGNALE JR.
A remarkable story by any stretch of the imagination, Catch Me If You Can by Frank Abagnale Jr tells the true life-story of the author who went from a home runaway, to a globe trotting con artist, then to a revolutionary consultant to the FBI and other law enforcement agencies and global firms. As one of the first and most successful check swindlers, Abagnale Jr. goes through in thorough detail the nature of his daredevil crimes and the international playboy lifestyle he began while still merely a teenager. He further delves into the loneliness and pain of a life of crime, a part of the book which provides an almost anti-climatic feel for those of us rooting for the 'bad guy'. The book was famously adapted into a movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by Steven Spielberg, with the same name, Catch Me If You Can.
