Open Letter from a Gangster
Why? Why should we stop the killing? You promised us accountability, transparency on your part, improved governance, where is it? It is a widespread view that we don’t pay attention to the happenings throughout the country, but you are mistaken. Some claim that it’s impossible to relate to us on a one to one basis, no bargaining with us, no dealings, but you politicians surely know where to find us when you need us, how to appease us when you want to. To stain our fingers red in your cause, you pay us a visit about once every so often. You’re just like us.
Some of you seem eager to bring back the hangman, why? For criminals to hang criminals? I ask you, where is Calder Hart? Where is Lawrence Duprey? Why wasn’t Ishwar Galbaransingh and Steve Ferguson extradited? You ask from us something you have of yourselves never been willing to give from the start. We’re seeking the same ends as you are, we’re going to get ahead by ‘hook or by crook.’ The system is rigged from the bottom to the top, systemic decay has engulfed your whole apparatus. If you weren’t stuck in your fancy offices so long you would have known that a sixteen (16) year-old boy could buy a driver’s license for less than one thousand dollars, almost the same price to ‘wash the hands’ of one of your trusted servicemen in uniform.
Don’t poor scorn on us, we are the product of your own creation, of your miniscule deviations from the truth, of your ‘politicking’ and under-hand ‘kick backs’. For this one you can’t buy a solution, you can’t educate your way out, oil-money can’t help you Trinidad! Neither will Mother Lakshmi nor Jesus Christ hear your prays. You can’t ‘Peace March’ your way out nor sing through it this time. You will suffer! Until you work your way out in the same way you worked your way in. Before you come down on us with your self-righteous diatribes, admit your own errors, your own follies and dishonest dealings. Consider what you have created.
